The Day After

I am writing a very quick post because I have no idea how long I will be able to stay connected!

We were very lucky regarding the hurricane - still without power, but we are fine.  I must admit, it was very scary last night.  The wind was rattling the windows so much, I was sure they would shatter.  It felt like the whole house was shaking.  We have been using our generator which we have hooked up to the heat, water and a few lights.  We only lost one tree, we have some minor roof damage and we don't have cable or land line phones.  I consider that nothing after hearing what the rest of the New York/New Jersey area is going through!  As you have probably seen on the news, the northeast is devastated.  In fact, you have probably seen more coverage of the storm than I have since we haven't had much access to the news.  I was able to get on Facebook a few times and saw a few pictures of the New Jersey shore that brought me to tears.  Oh and New York - unbelievable!

Thank you so much for all of your thoughts and prayers.  I will write more when I can.  At this point, my computer won't even let me upload pictures!

Please pray for the people who lost their homes and the families who lost loved ones.  This really was a horrible storm.  It is just so sad.

I hope all of you in the storm areas are safe!  Thanks for stopping by!

Sandy So Far

I am sure just by watching the news
you know where Hurricane Sandy is at the moment.

(The view from our dining room.)
So far in this part of New Jersey,
we have experienced wind gusts and some heavy downpours.
But they are forecasting the storm to become much worse...

Check out the front page of this morning's Star Ledger.

When I brought Rosie outside around 11:00 a.m.,
this is how things looked.
You can't really see much but if you look at the bushes,
you will see which way the wind is blowing.

The rain has slowed down a bit
but it is still very windy.

I had to use the leash because Rosie
wanted to chase every flying leaf and piece of debris she could find!
She would stay out there all day if I let her.
Yes, my house is beginning to smell like a wet dog.

Stay safe everyone!
If you don't hear from me,
it's because our electricity went out.
I will try to update from my iphone if I can.

The schools are closed today and tomorrow.
Who knows how our Halloween will be!

Are you being affected by this crazy storm?

Weekend Pupdate #37

Oh Rosie, Rosie, Rosie....
What am I going to do with you?

This week the electrician was here to fix some of our landscape lighting.

You see,
"somehow" one of our lights was ripped right out of the ground,
wires and all...

I will give you one guess who I found chewing the light
 on the front lawn.

The electrician fixed the wires, ordered a new light and replaced some light bulbs.

The yard was looking great.

Then this morning.
She struck again.
This irrigation drip hose was ripped right out of the ground.

This piece was pulled up too.

And as you can see on the right,
more wires were pulled up.

I was absolutely furious!

She knew she was bad and wouldn't come to me when I called her.  I think every person on my street must have heard me yelling, "Bad Dog!"

At one point, I just sat down on the step and cried.  Of course I was already in a cranky mood from the gasoline fumes in the garage.  You see, with the hurricane coming, my husband filled up the gas tanks for the generator and spilled gas in his car on the way home.  I swear I can smell gas everywhere now.

So after I composed myself, I called the invisible fence company and made an appointment for an estimate to move the fencing.  I no longer want that beast to have access to the front yard or the landscaping.  We never should have allowed that in the first place.

I was just so angry with Rosie today.
I actually had to pull out the baby pictures
to remind myself how much I love her!

Ok, now I want to cry again...

Has anyone dug up your yard lately?

Ok, What Do I Do?

Something is wrong with my blog and I need whatever help I can get!

I just signed on and saw all these words embedded into my text
that linked to advertisements that I

Even some of the comments have underlined words embedded into them
linking them to advertisements.

PLEASE DO NOT click on to any of those links!!

Something really strange is going on because
I signed off, then signed on and they were gone.
Then later on, I went back and THEY WERE THERE AGAIN!!!

And if you have any advice on what I can do,
I hope it is just some simple solution
or something I clicked on by mistake...

***********UPDATE - Today (10/27) the links are not showing.  Yesterday I emailed Blogger and they told me to check the add-ons and pop-ups.  I disabled whatever I could - don't ask me details because I really have no idea what I did.  They also said that most likely I was the only one who could see these things on my blog.  So who knows, it seems like everything is ok at the moment.  If you happen to notice some random words underlined on my blog, please let me know.  Some examples of words underlined that linked to ads were the words, "job", "coffee table" and "window" for examples.  What a pain.  Anyway, I will keep my fingers crossed that this problem is resolved!  Thanks again for reading!

Thank you!
- Shelley

Not only are we preparing for trick or treaters around here,
but we are preparing for another Halloween storm!

this is what the trick or treaters will be seeing next week...
Yes, my mom had the kids over to carve pumpkins the other day.

My older, more serious son went with the traditional Jack-O-Lantern.

While my not-so-serious younger son
went for the "Mario" stenciled style.
This one took Mimi (my mom) much longer that she had anticipated!

The boys also added some more decorating of their own.
They received those skeleton window decals
at a recent party.

Here is a view from the inside.
Yes, the "blood" decals are a lovely touch...boys!

The kids had so much fun helping me decorate this year.  I know it was a bit early to carve pumpkins so I hope they don't rot before Halloween!  But more importantly, I hope we don't get hit with "Sandy" the hurricane heading toward the northeast!  Last year, we lost power for a couple days and didn't even get to carve pumpkins.  No wonder the boys were so excited to carve them this year.

Remember last year's crazy storm?!!

Since then, we bought a generator so we are ready to go if necessary!  Let's just hope we don't have to use it!  According to the recent weather reports, the storm is headed straight towards us!  Just great...

Halloween Vignette

My 8 year old helped me decorate
the living room coffee table this year.

It was time to pull out the pine cones...
and of course our little scarecrow.
"We" would have added much more
but "we" decided to scale back a little.
(I can't believe that plant is still alive.)

And we couldn't forget his pumpkin!
He painted this over the summer at our pottery studio outing.
It turned out great, don't you think?
He is so proud of it.
We were sure to put it in a noticeable spot!

It sure is feeling like Halloween around here!

Weekend Pupdate #36

It's been a beautiful fall weekend.

The perfect weather to play in the leaves...

or in Rosie's case, carry them around...

and chase them across the driveway.

It was quite the adventure for her.

And even more fun to carry around branches.

Autumn can be such a blast!

Did you enjoy the fall weather this weekend?

The Area Rug Scare

Sometimes I jump to conclusions...
(I can hear my husband now - "Sometimes?!!")

Anyway, I had a little bit of a scare with the area rug in my bedroom.

Last week, I noticed the rug was a little off center and when I went to move it into place, the corner flipped over, exposing the underside of the rug.  There were patches of white underneath and immediate I freaked out and ran to my computer to look up what "white mold" looks like.

Well, sure enough, the pictures on the internet looked similar to my rug so I quickly rolled up the rug and threw it into the garage.  I sprayed my bedroom carpet with Oxyclean, let it dry, vacuumed it up while wearing a painter's mask (I kid you not!) and called our carpet cleaner.  I had to leave a message and they didn't call me back right away.

I would not allow my kids to walk in "the spot" and I instructed them that we are NEVER to leave a wet towel on the rug again.  You see, my kids like to take showers and baths in my bathroom and then come into my room and watch TV before bed.  They tend to be careless with their towels and usually one of the towels ends up on the area rug at some point.

Over the weekend, I came down with a terrible cold.  Now of course I was convinced that the cold was actually an allergy to the mold that I was sure I was breathing in.  First thing Monday morning I called the carpet cleaner again.  We use a local guy who has been friends with my best friend's husband since high school.  It is a family run business and I trust everything they tell me.  When I spoke to his wife, she said she never got my first message.  (I was actually worried that they were avoiding me because I used the word, "mold" in the message.)  I explained the situation again and she didn't seem too alarmed.  She set up an appointment for 9:00 this morning.

When he arrived, he looked at my carpet and said he didn't see any mold.  He also checked out the area rug which was now rolled up in the garage, ready to be thrown out.  He said the white stuff wasn't mold but it was the netting separating from the glue on the back of the rug.  He said that wall to wall carpet off-gasses and the rug on top was actually deteriorating a little.  He was not concerned at all!  So he cleaned my carpet AND cleaned the section of the family room where Rosie threw up recently.  Yes, she threw up in there right after the rug was cleaned last time!  I told him I was going to throw out the area rug anyway since it was coming apart on the back and it did leave a bit of discoloration on the carpet.  He said he could clean the rug and donate it if I wanted so I told him to take it!

I am kind of sad now to have the rug gone.  I always liked that rug, although at one point I did think about changing it.  I don't think I will put another rug there now.  Instead, I will try to convince my husband to put in hardwood floors!  HA!  That's a real joke.  He is a major "carpet in the bedroom" type of guy so I don't think I will get my way there...oh well.

At least I don't have mold...or mold-allergy-induced-congestion.  I just have a cold...and a bit of a tendency to overreact!

Have you ever had any mold scares in your house?
Do you jump to conclusions?

Fall Front Door - Decorating the Entrance

This weekend,
I finally got around to decorating my front door and porch.

I just kept things very simple
I might add some more Halloween-y type things in a week or so.

I found this flower filled tin at Michael's.

I have to keep the mums close to the door
since the deer around here eat everything in sight.

And if you read my last post,
you'll see that the deer aren't the only ones
who try to wreck my decorating!

She even stole my gloves while I was working...

Have you decorated your front door yet?
Or am I the only one who waited till mid-October?

Weekend Pupdate #35

When I woke up today,
I wondered if I would have
any amusing Rosie posts to write this week.
Things have been pretty uneventful around here

Then I decided to decorate the front porch...
And a certain frisky dog
decided to steal the pumpkins!

I am not sure what her plan was,
but she enjoyed carrying them around!

And she had the boys chasing her all over the yard.

She tried being clever
by hiding behind a bush.
But we eventually caught her.

But she wasn't ready to give up.
She managed to drag the big pumpkin off the porch.

As you can see,
she is still in her chewing phase!

Has anyone sabotaged your fall decorating recently?

Fall Mantel 2012

I finally got around to updating my mantel today.
The beachy-shell theme wasn't really working for me
on this brisk October day!

I hung a round mirror that has been sitting around here
for the past few months.
I worked with the black from the mirror
and dove into the typical Halloween black and orange.

By the time I took the pictures,
the sun was no longer brightening the room
so I really needed to turn on the recessed lighting above.

The lighting made things look even more orange.

This little wooden sign
is from my neighborhood "spook basket" from last Halloween.
I hope I get some more fun treats this year!

And here is a shot without the light on.
Maybe I should have taken them all like this!
Oh well...
Who knows if the mantel will stay this way.

Last year,
this is what my fall mantel looked like...
It took me three tries to get to this.
See the other two HERE.

And once again, my 2012 mantel...
I think I like the 2011 one better.
This one will have to grow on me.

So there's one thing I can cross off my list.

Weekend Pupdate #34

All I can say is....

This is not what I signed up for...

This is what happens when you have an invisible fence
and decide to trust your dog outside alone for a few minutes...

Look at the smug expression!
She actually seems annoyed that I am taking her picture.

Yes, this lovely look was achieved
in the few minutes it took me to empty the dishwasher
Thursday morning.

these footprints never made it inside the house.

This was the scene of the crime.
Water was dripping from the base of the basketball net,
making the perfect muddy puddle!
Perfect for a mischievous dog to tear into.

I didn't know if I should laugh or cry.
I attempted to rinse her off with the hose
but it was a little chilly that day.

I wiped her down the best I could
and then called Petsmart to see if I could get an emergency bath.
Luckily, they had an opening
so I lined my carseat with towels and off we went.

Clean once again.
She was washed, blow dried,
had her ears and teeth cleaned and nails clipped.

She wasn't loving the Brett Michaels "Pets Rock" bandana though.
Not exactly her style.

She ripped it right off.

Take that Brett Michaels!

You would think that with both kids in school,
I could get loads of projects completed around here!

that is not the case...
Not with my ongoing "project"...

How about you?
Did you have to deal with any muddy messes this week?
