Kitchen Layout Inspiration and a Question

You might see a few kitchen posts in the near future
as we plan a remodel of ours.
I have been trying to decide on a layout that works best for our family.

Right now, we have a peninsula where the cook top is located.

In the new kitchen, I would like to change this configuration to an island, but I am not completely sure about where to place the cook top.

One option...
I could have the cook top installed on the island like above.  Right now my refrigerator is located in place of the wall oven in this picture so I could leave that since I don't have enough space in there to move the fridge as shown above.

I have gotten used to seeing the rest of the room while I am cooking so this configuration is a workable option for me.  On the other hand, I do like the idea of having more free space on the island for entertaining and eating.

The other option...

We could relocate the cook top to the far wall.  This way I could have an awesome hood and even a possible pot filler.  Of course I would be away from all "the action" in the kitchen if I were facing the wall while cooking.  I would have to move my fridge too.

Decisions, decisions...

Where is your cook top and are you happy with the placement?

  1. Love the idea of the back wall with the hood and pot filler. You don't really have your back to the rest of the kitchen that much when cooking, so I don't think it would be a problem. Mine is on the back wall. I love having a big (really big) island for entertaining and using as prep cooking space. Can't wait to see what you do.

  4. Yet another vote to keep the island open! I struggled with the exact same decision in our kitchen and have never regretted keeping the island as prep/entertaining space. Also, pot fillers are awesome!!

  5. I would put the cooktop on that back wall next to your fridge so you can use your island for the kids doing homework, buffets, general entertaining. I had that configuration in my last house and loved it. The kids LIVED at the island!!

  7. I've got my cooktop against the wall as in pic #2...and was always able to keep track of everyone...kids included. It will be fun to follow along...and see what you do! ;)

  8. I love option #2 Because then you island is completely free to serve as a table or a buffets setting etc!!

  9. I would definitely prefer option 2. I like the idea of having lots of open space on the bar area. It's safer too!

Good luck with the renovations-I can't wait to see the end product!

  10. I have mine on the island, and it's by choice since like you said, I like to be part of the 'action'. My office is across the island, and when my son uses the computer for school work, he usually needs supervision, so I can see while I cook. You have to have a super powerful vent though if you want it on the island.

  11. I also have my cooktop counter height on the island and an eat-in bar height portion for the island, to avoid any splatter or accidents whenever I'm cooking. You can check out my kitchen to see

  12. I love how you have decorated that wall of your kitchen. The tea towel idea is really sweet. I have used these strips on our new cabinets too and they work great. I recently added one to the backside of the valence over the kitchen window/sink area to hang an old wire egg basket. Thanks for sharing your decorating ideas. I hope you have a beautiful day.

  13. My cooktop is facing a wall, but I am not really standing there too terribly much, even though I do a lot of cooking. I have a large island which is void of any sink, appliance, etc., and I love that. It is such a great work surface, display area, & buffet space. Oh, you have lots of decisions to make -- sometimes stressful but still fun!

  14. You must be so excited to do your kitchen, that can be a real fun project. I like the stove facing the wall and keeping the island free. A lot of times the stove area can be the focal point in the kitchen. But, it is all up to you and what works best for you. Good luck deciding, I can't wait to see what you choose.

  15. I love all your inspiration rooms. It's going to be gorgeous! My friends with cooktops on the island always complain about it. I've never had an island, so I wouldn't know. Big decisions, but exciting, too!

  16. I agree..it is yours to do what you want with, but I am in love with the boston design (the other option). Whatever you create will make it worth it in the end to you! I think the moving and change of layout isnt such a bad thing..what works for you an
d your family is also just another part of redoing things to look and feel better with function. Thanks for sharing and i can't wait to see what you decide on.
